The Benefits of Citrus
There are several benefits of citrus, and when the snow is falling and the sky is grey, I definitely find I need some injections of colour and brightness to cheer me up, which is why I love Citrus fruit – and colours – so much. Indeed – Colour Psychologists, Beauty Therapists and Nutritionists alike highly rate the cheering scents, invigorating colour and uplifting properties of Citrus fruits.
One way to reap the benefits of citrus fruits is through essential oils. Even just inhaling a whiff of a citrus oil like lime from a bottle can make me grin. But each oil has quite specific properties too, so have a look below at some of the key benefits and how to choose the best fruit essential oil to suit you. Look for certified organic citrus oils like ours, which are guaranteed to have been extracted from fruit peel that has not been treated with herbicides, pesticides or other damaging chemicals.
Oranges are synonymous with sunshine and the essential oil is recognised as being effective in boosting your mood and nurturing a positive state of mind. Get the scent and the taste with our luscious Lip Silk lip balm!
Likewise, Grapefruit is a brilliant product for revitalising your body and mind – a key ingredient of our ‘Revive’ essential oil blend – and it is combined with orange in our equally uplifting and skin toning Bump Butter for pregnant mums.
Detoxing is also included in the benefits of citrus. Inhaling citrus oils either from a tissue or within a skincare preparation can help to de-stress and eliminate toxins… perhaps lingering from seasonal festivities! How does all this work? When you inhale citrus essential oils, the aromatic molecules connect with the part of the brain which controls the hormone and endocrine system, triggering a reaction to modify and balance their function.
In addition, when applied to the skin, citrus essential oils go to work cleansing, stimulating and detoxifying. This is why citrus oils are such a valuable ingredient in cleansers and toners. We use the finest organic Sicilian lemon essential oil in our Lemon & Tea Tree Facial Wash for normal-oily skin and in our Ylang Ylang and Orange bodywash the fusion of flowers and fruit gives an aroma reminiscent of Mediterranean orange orchards.
The citrus fruit family (e.g. bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, orange etc) is known for its delicious fresh, mouth-watering flavour and aroma and its vitamin C rich juice, but did you know that the essential oil contained in their peel is much more than a food flavouring? As well as being antibacterial and toning for the skin, Citrus oils are one of nature’s multi-taskers – not only are they great in skincare products, but they’re also incredibly useful to have around the house. A few drops added to water makes an effective non-toxic surface cleaner ideal in the kitchen around food and children.
Many citrus fruits are in season at this time of year, so if you’re partial to them, snack on satsumas and clementines, breakfast on grapefruit for a metabolic boost and squeeze lemon juice in your tea or hot water with honey to soothe colds and sore throats for a healthy dose of juicy vitamins!
For a delightful combo of all our citrus oils, Balancing Citrus Super Tonic is not just a great skin toner and reviver but equally effective as a fragrant room spray either for relieving tension and mental fatigue or simply to freshen the air.
