Your baby’s nursery should be a safe and restful place and there are so many things you can do to make it a haven for your baby.

Always choose non-toxic paints with low VOC’s. These types of paints have almost no smell and will not irritate your baby’s lungs.
It’s always a good idea to choose natural floorings in a nursery such as organic cork. It can be difficult to keep carpets really clean but you could have a colourful organic cotton or wool rug for soft play. When you wash hard floors, do choose a fragrance-free floor soap and preferably organic to ensure that your baby is not breathing in any synthetic fragrance or harmful chemicals.
When it comes to curtains, blinds and soft furnishings, organic cotton will usually be the best choice. Non-organic cotton is usually highly sprayed with pesticides so organic is always the best option.
Again organic cotton or wool for blankets is always the best choice to minimize exposure to toxic chemicals found in other fabrics and to keep your baby cool.
Think about choosing organic laundry products to avoid nasty chemicals and synthetic fragrances to help your baby avoid developing allergies like eczema and asthma – so common in children these days. Make sure you check labels as many laundry products do not include a full list of ingredients – ‘fragrance’ can be a whole cocktail of synthetic chemicals.
Fresh air is very important for a baby’s young lungs, so open windows when pollen levels are lowest in the middle of the day and also when pollution levels are lowest. If you live near a busy road, it might be a good idea to invest in an air purifier.
When you clean surfaces, use a fragrance-free organic cleaner and a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner can help to remove tiny particles of dust and other allergens. For a really deep clean you could use a steam cleaner to remove harmful bacteria.
